There is a significant need for human tissue, organs and serum for research that will produce a next generation of medicines. But recent reports of illegal sale of body parts by unauthorized individuals associated with a major California University creates a poor image for researchers and reminds us of the ethical questions regarding the use of human tissue. The responsibility to be sure that human tissue specimens are obtained in legal and ethical manners is shared in part by both providers and researchers.
